DON'T DARE MISS THREATCON DELTA: ASSAULT ON THE PENTAGON
A Feast of Fun for Action Fans
Booklist
Threatcon Delta: Assault on the Pentagon tells the
story of how terrorism, treason and global organized crime converge to place the
most potent symbol of American military power under the control of a determined
and ruthless group of heavily armed and extremely dangerous men who can’t be
stopped, yet who must be stopped. This global superthriller is based both on
author David Alexander’s detailed research into the history of the Pentagon and
on first-hand knowledge of the Pentagon's most closely held secrets by this
veteran defense insider, all of which has been artfully woven into a masterpiece
of high-concept action fiction.
In fact, the combined impact of accuracy and
authenticity blended with superb storytelling may find some readers asking
themselves if perhaps some parts of the story shouldn't have been made public,
for fear that terrorists or global criminals might some day use it as a basis
for an actual plan of attack.
Yet the assault on the Pentagon portrayed in
the book is no standard terrorist martyrdom mission either. Those who’ve taken
over the headquarters of the United States military have an exit strategy that
has been brilliantly devised to shuttle them to safety and provide for the
enjoyment of their ill-gotten profits -- a scam on a global scale that promises
to net the Building’s hijackers a considerable fortune. His intimate knowledge
about the Pentagon, Offices of the Secretary of Defense and of the Joint Chiefs
of Staff, of the White House, and an assortment of government agencies that few
know even exist, and the manner in which they've all been artfully woven into
the powerful narrative, is yet one more thing that makes this high-concept
thriller the unique and exciting classic of the genre that it is. From the
workings of the Single Integrated Operations Plan or SIOP for nuclear warfare to
believable descriptions of advanced weapons and cyber cash money laundering
schemes, this riveting super thriller stands totally in a class by itself.
In fact, it all has such a ring of accuracy and
legitimacy about it that some readers might find themselves wondering if maybe
some of this shouldn't have been made public, for fear that terrorists or global
criminals might some day use it as an actual plan of attack.
By any standard, Threatcon Delta: Assault
on the Pentagon is action thriller fiction at its boldest and best. It’s one of
the achievements that have earned David Alexander a secure place at the top of
the list of the world’s masters of the game.
BLACK MANTA
A Superb Achievement!
Washington Post
Black Manta's high-velocity plot kept moving without needing to catch its breath with the shopworn tricks of the trade that mark many another thriller author's books. By this I mean shifting to back-stories that are irrelevant to the plot but help pad a weak author who finds himself on the literary ropes. Another commonly found tactic is to launch into a few score or pages dealing with "our hero's" broken marriage, snotty kids or problems paying his taxes. No need to worry about finding that in this rocker and shocker of a global technothriller.
BLOODBATH
Packed with slam-bang action and relentless, coiled-spring suspense.
Los Angeles Times
Iran is bracing for war and poised to make an armed
grab for regional hegemony. Its leadership in Tehran is preparing to play a
secret military trump card. Long in preparation, Iran's nuclear warfare program
has yielded an array of weapons of mass destruction and delivery systems to drop
nukes onto targets in the Middle East and as far away as the continental reaches
of the United States.
Shock and awe air strikes have so far failed to
destroy Iran's hardened weapons development facilities, its protected missile
launch sites, or its bomb-proof and hard-to-find aircraft hangars.
Iran's
vast armies are also ready to march in human wave attacks against US bases in
Iraq. Tehran is prepared to wage war and primed to win. Washington and the
Pentagon have both proven utterly powerless to either negotiate a settlement or
forestall Iran's aggression through effective military action.
But
there is an answer. Lightning assault by joint, combined arms strategic forces
leveraging America's next-generation combat systems and advanced warfighting
tactics in order to prevail against otherwise impossible odds.
Bloodbath is an edge-of-the-seat doomsday countdown
thriller packed with slam-bang action and relentless, coiled-spring suspense.
DAVID ALEXANDER'S CHAIN REACTION IS A SMASH HIT!
WASHINGTON POST
This is one of those books that come along from time to time that just grab you and pull you along. I found myself comparing it to Hammet's The Maltese Falcon in that it featured a character who was driven to go to the limits and even beyond the limits in order to make sure that justice was done.
I don't know if this is as good as Hammet's classic detective novel, but I think I can rate Chain Reaction as definitely having a place in the short list of the best hardboiled thrillers.
Plus this is is also an action thriller in the spy mold as well. I think of it, in fact, as spy-boiled, if I may be so bold to define a genre on my own.
I think one of the things that hooked me right away was that in a world where a real terrorist mastermind who was behind one of the worst atrocities in history, authorities continue brushing bin Laden off as "a little terrorist," when we all know that capturing him and making him face the music would have tremendous impact.
In Chain Reaction, the same bureaucratic indifference to the capture of Vanesco, a terrorist in the same league as bin Laden, also becomes the gospel of officialdom, and the cop sent to bring him back to New York to face justice realizes that he's just been used as as pawn in a political game by high-ups who don't care about the lives affected by the terrorist attack.
Here, unlike in reality, one guy defies everybody and everything, risking his life to go after and apprehend a master assassin who controls squads of terrorists across the length and breadth of western and eastern Europe. Detective Lieutenant Jack Keller is just not going to quit while still alive. You've got to kill him to stop him, and even after being shot Keller pushes on, not willing to stop. It was very satisfying to find that justice was meted out in the end to the organizer of mass murder, and by one of the terrorist's victims who'd been present at ground zero.
Keller's character, and the plot of Chain Reaction, also reminds me of the difference between this story and the psychological pap of cop shows on TV these days. I mean, maybe Kojack was kind of trite, but these cop shows today have more to do with hair styles than actual police work. I mean, does anybody really "buy" these cute girls they have running around in tight pants as actual detectives? Do cops spend hours doing their hair, painting their nails and putting on lipstick? Seriously, this stuff is laughable nonsense. It's totally for idiots. Another thing I wonder about is why most of the ex-stars of Sex in the City are in many of these same cop shows? If the producers are trying to make the episodes look like "reality TV" then they might as well film them in beauty parlors. I mean, not to sound chauvinistic or anything, but these TV cop chicks can barely pin on their shields without their knees buckling. Also, did you notice that they whip out these tiny guns? If they tried to pull a Desert Eagle on a bad guy, or some other big magnum, then they'd probably injure their cute little wrists and the next scene would be the cops at a chiropractor's office getting heat treatments for carpal tunnel syndrome.
I'd like to see Chain Reaction made into a movie, made-for-cable, or first-run. And then I'd like to see what would happen to all the woosie cop junk they've dished out for years already. What I think would happen would be that Chain Reaction would change everything. Nobody would want to see these lipstick cops anymore making kissy-kissy at criminals instead of busting them in the mouth like they deserve. Instead it would be more of thrilling stories like Chain Reaction that the public would clamor for. For now, at least we've got this book. Most of the rest of what's out there is about as exciting as watching somebody doing their nails.
